Why we should invest in downturn market ?

In the wake of the turbulence of stock markets in recent months, unit trustinvestors may be tempted to either sell or buy. However, investors are advised toremain calm and practise dollar cost averaging with their long-term goals in view. When regional and global markets succumbed to panic selling in August 2007 and morerecently in January 2008, the severity and sharpness of the correction was largeenough to make unit trust investors ask themselves whether they should redeem now tostem further losses or buy more units at currently low prices. In fact, if theypractise dollar cost averaging, they need not concern themselves with these timingissues. Dollar cost averaging enables investors to automatically buy more units whenprices fall and fewer units when prices rise.It is especially during times of market volatility that individual investors shouldremain focused on their long-term investment goals and keep their emotions frominfluencing their investment decisions. A disciplined and methodical approach toinvesting is the key to long-term investment success.Unit trust investors are advised to buy and hold their investments for the medium tolong term. The buy-and-hold principle is based on the notion that a good investmentwill generate reasonably attractive returns over the medium to long term. This alsomeans that investors are able to distinguish between daily movements in the marketand the underlying long-term value of their investments. Professional fund managersbuy and hold for the medium to long term as they are prepared to wait patiently overseveral years for their investments to reach their intrinsic or fair values. For theunit trust investor, the 'buy-and-hold' strategy can also be applied by holding onto a well-selected unit trust fund over a period of at least three years. There are some investors who believe they can achieve superior returns by timing thepurchase and redemption of equity funds to profit from the stockmarket's short-termmovements. These investors are tempted to engage in timing the market especially inan environment where equity markets are volatile. Such investors who wish to makequick gains in the stock market by switching from one fund into another fund willoften be disappointed. Market timing strategies that are often recommended by'investment experts' have seldom been successful. This is because stock markets areinherently volatile and are impossible to predict with numerous factors, bothdomestic and foreign, affecting daily and weekly fluctuations in stock prices.Investors who wish to take a more active approach with their investments by timingthe market will expose themselves to many risks. In order to profit from themarket's short-term trends, the investor has to correctly predict the market's trendand its turning points.Without the appropriate skills to discern signals and time the entries and exits, the market timer may not only miss opportunities, but also potentially suffer theblow of rapid losses. Also with a higher frequency of fund switching, investors willhave to incur increased transaction costs.Investors who are concerned about market volatility are advised to practise dollarcost averaging as this strategy enables investors to focus on the long-terminvestment goal and not worry about the prevailing level of the market. Dollar costaveraging is simply investing a fixed amount of money in a financial asset (such asa unit trust fund) on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, biannual) regardless ofthe market cycle. By investing a fixed amount on a regular basis, investors will buymore units when the market is lower and fewer units when the market is higher. Thisstrategy will produce a lower average cost of investment than the average marketprice over any given period. In addition, investors are also advised to rebalance their portfolios regularly atleast once a year to ensure that their portfolio allocation reflects theirinvestment objectives and risk profile. Thus if, as a result of an uptrend in stockprices, an investor's equity exposure has exceeded a level consistent with his risktolerance, he can trim a portion of the equity funds and switch into bond or moneymarket funds to rebalance the asset allocation accordingly. Maintaining a targetasset allocation reduces the risk that the portfolio becomes too concentrated in asingle asset class. In conclusion, unit trust investors should always focus on achieving their medium tolong-term investment goals. The practice of dollar cost averaging and regularportfolio rebalancing are effective tools that help investors remain focused on thelong term horizon and prevent them from over-reacting to short-term movements of thestockmarket.

O2 HDA IIS
Previous this PDA phone is selling as RM3599! Now, selling as RM688 only!
You may consider to get it as a collection item too~ Don't miss it!

The XDA IIs comes close to being the ultimate wireless handheld, featuring quad-band GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), Class 8 and 10 General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), WiFi and Bluetooth.

However, what sets the XDA IIs apart from its rivals is that it features a cool slide-out thumb-keyboard. And that’s not all that this handheld has going for it.

The hardware
This is one mean-looking machine it is dressed all in black and looks like a refined version of the original XDA II.

At a glance, it doesn’t look like much has changed with the design but that’s where you’d be wrong. Slide the screen upwards and you will find a full QWERTY thumb-keyboard.

What is impressive is that O2 has managed to integrate the keyboard without making its handheld thicker than most other Pocket PCs.

The XDA IIs retains the “Hang up,” “Call,” “Contacts” and “Calendar” buttons of its predecessor, but has three more buttons – providing shortcuts to the Today screen, messaging application, and Internet Explorer – and a fourth which is a dedicated “OK” button to make it easier to navigate the menus with one hand.

Its battery pack is removable and now has a capacity of 1,490mAh, which is a bump-up from the 1,200mAh capacity of the XDA II unit – a 25% increase.

The processor is still an Intel PXA263 XScale, running at 400MHz, but the ROM has been upgraded to 96MB of usable space for storage.

As far as RAM goes, the XDA IIs has 128MB, which is a good thing since there are a lot of services and applications that run in the background when you first fire up the handheld.

MEDIA WANTS FREEDOM

He the minister don't know everything....!!!!

The soon-to-be established National Media Council will to ensure the local media is more transparent and responsible and will not restrict press freedom, said Information Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek today.
MCPXAhmad Shabery, according to a Bernama report, said the media council was a better was to run the media and that many countries had their own press commissions or media councils."Some countries like the United Kingdom have press complaint commissions where people dissatisfied because they had been defamed or put in a bad light can seek remedy," he told reporters at Angkasapuri where he attended after his ministry's Aidilfitri open house. He was responding to questions on an announcement by Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar on Monday that the council would be established soon to identify existing weaknesses to ensure better accuracy in reporting.Ahmad Shabery also said that the new council will help end the common perception that complaints on the government were being addressed very slowly. He added that his ministry will be holding discussions with stakeholders to identify existing weaknesses so that appropriate remedial action could be taken."This is a serious matter as it concerns how the Fourth Estate can be better supervised so that it is more transparent and responsible."When we say more responsible, we do not want to see only the agenda of certain groups being pushed forward and not the interests of all Malaysians," he said.He also said that models in countries like Australia and Britain would be studied before the matter was finalised.Don't publish liesThe minister also reminded bloggers and Internet media practitioners to remain responsible. He however said that the numbers of these people abusing the medium was small."They (bloggers and Internet media practitioners) must also be more responsible and not publish lies and falsehoods. Also in the context of multiracial harmony, it is important to know when to exercise restraint," he said.He said the overriding concern in having the council was to preserve the peace and national harmony."It is all about maintaining a balance. There cannot be absolute freedom neither can there be too much restrictions," he added.

FUEL PRICE DOWN

Today,Global oil reduce oil price $67.65 per barrel.now malaysia goverment promise want reduce the fuel if global oil&gas going down.but we still waiting goverment reduce the price,if global oil down.we can't stand with the price after goverment hike price a couple month.

Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) -- OPEC, founded five decades ago to unify oil producers, risks dividing members as the group plans to cut output and raise prices just as developed nations face their worst recession since 1983.
Iran's energy minister, Gholamhossein Nozari, said yesterday OPEC may slash output quotas by 2.5 million barrels a day, or 8.7 percent, an amount about equal to what's pumped from Kuwait. The Algerian minister and OPEC president, Chakib Khelil, said two days earlier the reduction at the group's Oct. 24 meeting in Vienna may be only 1 million barrels.
The debate in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries pits Saudi Arabia, the group's biggest producer and a U.S. ally, against Venezuela and Iran, two nations that oppose U.S. foreign policy and advocate higher oil costs. Crude has plunged 53 percent from its July 11 record of $147.27 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It traded at $69.37 today.
``The divisions arise in OPEC because what countries need and want varies,'' said Gareth Lewis-Davies, an oil analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort Group Ltd. in London. ``The Saudis are playing a long-term political game. Other countries have higher costs.''
Saudi Arabia needs oil prices of less than $30 a barrel to balance its government budget, according to Merrill Lynch & Co. estimates. The United Arab Emirates requires $40 a barrel and Qatar $55.

Below $50
Oil options trading shows the probability that crude will fall below $50 a barrel by June has more than doubled in 10 days, Deutsche Bank AG said in an Oct. 17 report. There is a 9 percent likelihood that June 2009 crude oil contracts will expire below $50, up from 4 percent, Deutsche said.
The world's industrialized economies will expand next year at the slowest pace since 1982, the International Monetary Fund said Oct. 8. Growth will weaken to 0.5 percent in 2009, from 1.5 percent this year, sending U.S. unemployment to its highest level in 16 years, the agency said.
Oil demand may fall for the first time in 15 years this year as the worst financial crisis in decades tips economies into recession, according to the Centre for Global Energy Studies, a London-based consulting company.

OPEC members are worried that they will be slow to react and oil prices will drop to $50 or $40 a barrel,'' said Rick Mueller, director of oil markets at Energy Security Analysis Inc. in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

NEWS "CJ"

The Dewan Rakyat was informed today that an emergency motion to debate the proposed appointment of Zaki Azmi as the new chief justice was rejected on the grounds that such a motion breached provisions against discussing the behavior or character of senior judges.
MCPXDeputy Speaker Wan Junaidi Tuaku Jaafar (left) said the motion, submitted by Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian) last week, was rejected in Chambers as both 36(8) of the Standing Orders and Article 127 of the Federal Constitution forbids the legislature from discussing the conduct or character of High Court, Court of Appeal or Federal Court judges. The only way such a motion can succeed in being tabled is as a substantive motion and must have the support of no less than one-quarters of the total number of members of Parliament, he said.Wan Junaidi also cited the book 'Document of Destiny' written by constitutional expert Shad Saleem Faruqi on the Federal Constitution to support his stand on the insulation and immunity of judges from “politically-inspired criticisms.”Zaki (left) is currently Court of Appeal president and was nominated by the Conference of Rulers last week as the country’s top judge to replace Abdul Hamid Mohamad. His rise up the judicial ranks from a corporate lawyer after being appointed by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s administration over a score of more senior judges met with outcry from several quarters due to his affiliations with Umno, including having been its legal advisor.Supporting the call for the motion to be debated, independent MP (Pasir Mas) Ibrahim Ali said this is preferable to the government letting it spread on the Internet as public fodder for its detractors and thereby become a liability.“If it is rejected in chambers and the motion spreads outside (this Dewan), it will have negative results (for the government),” said the MP.'Tendency to reject'Ibrahim also expressed disappointment with what he described as the ‘tendency’ of the speaker and deputy speakers - unlike their predecessors - to reject in Chambers motions submitted to them.“It is disappointing, like losing a girlfriend. I am trying to help this Dewan ... I myself in previous parliamentary sittings have lost motivation (due to the rejection of many motions),” he said.Chipping in, veteran politician Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) said tabling the motion under Standing Order 27 as a substantive one would relegate it to the bottom of Parliament orders of the day and ensure it is not discussed at all.“It would go to the bottom of the list and up to the last day will not see the light of day,” he said.Responding to Ibrahim’s contention that most motions have been rejected in Chambers, the deputy speaker said he would discuss the matter with Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia. However, Wan Junaidi was adamant on the issue of Zaki being a no-go area for the time being.“When it has to do with (Standing Order) 36(8), there can be no compromise because it ties in with the Federal Constitution and the Standing Orders... The issue of (it being a matter of) Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat politics does not rise in this matter,” he said.During a press conference later, Salahuddin said he would raise the Zaki matter in his debate speech on the 2009 Budget.

Block and Pastrana wrap up Rally America Championship

Victory on this weekend’s Lake Superior Performance Rally for P-WRC driver Ken Block and a podium for Travis Pastrana secured the Subaru Rally Team USA duo first and second place in the 2008 Rally America National Championship.
The event was the 9th and final round of the American Championship and covered 197 miles of special stages along the northern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino started the rally locked in a battle for second overall in the championship with young privateer Subaru driver Kyle Sarasin and Canadian driver Andrew Comrie-Picard.
Block's 2008 domestic season has been one of ups and downs; after a strong start with multiple wins he later experienced a string of poor results and misfortune which helped Pastrana take control of the series. On the Lake Superior rally, however, Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino returned to form and were virtually untouchable in their Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Block took the lead on the first stage and went on to win 11 of 17 stages and finish with a lead of more than one minute. The result concluded a successful domestic season for Block and Pastrana who between them won six of the nine events.
"I'm glad to end the season with the win. Now I've got some momentum going into next year, so I'm very happy," said Block. "It's great for the team to finish 1-2 in the Championship, and we have proven the new 2008 STI can win, next year it will only get better."
After mathematically securing the championship at the previous round in Colorado, Pastrana entered the rally with little pressure to win. So to further his development he requested American rally legend John Buffum co-drive for him at this final Rally America round. Buffum is the most successful American rally driver of all time, with 11 championship titles to his name and over 120 rally wins.
Starting 3rd on the road, the duo was slowed by heavy dust as well as a puncture early in the event. Pastrana settled for third overall while Block and Sarasin continued to push each other for the overall victory.
"I had the pleasure of teaming up with rally legend John Buffum. I think he has forgotten more about rally than I will ever know! It was amazing just having him in the car," explained Pastrana. "Although we weren't fighting for the win, it's impossible to not have fun on these Michigan roads."
After finishing 13th in the P-WRC competition on his last WRC outing in New Zealand, Block will be back in his Impreza on the forthcoming Rally Japan.

Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, tabling his budget speech in the state legislature this morning, claimed that the losses were due to “dishonesty, irresponsibility and the lack of transparency” when BN ran the state.

“One example is the release of state land free of charge or with a trade-off, instead of directly developing the land which would have been more profitable,” he said.

State welfare, according to Khalid, was never a priority for his predecessor Dr Mohd Khir Toyo (right), while the ‘zero-squatters’ policy was not about housing development for the poor but to “enrich” some groups.

“The real motive behind the zero-squatter policy was to clear the land to be given to private companies through land development joint-venture enterprise,” he said.

Khalid added that these contracts were given to private companies directly without going through an open tender process, thereby benefitting companies that were incapable of implementing the projects.

“(Contrary to what Umno claims) these policies do not provide business opportunities to the Malays,” he added.

Although Selangor was awarded developed state status in 2005, Khalid said cannot be attributed to the previous government’s policies.

“The development was influenced by regional market trends that encouraged foreign investors like Intel, Motorola, Sony and Matsushita to invest in the state.”

Khalid claimed that the lack of transparency in the distribution of contracts has led to the ballooning of infrastructure costs - roads and public buildings - in the state.

Eye on GLC heads

Chief executive officers of government-linked companies (GLCs) involved in the joint-venture projects also be held accountable for this, he said, and not just Mohd Khir.

“Since we assumed power, the CEOs of these GLCs - when asked to clarify - could not rationalise their decisions which are lopsided against the state. Without shame, they placed the blame on the former MB,” he said.

Khalid was referring to Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd, Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor and Perbadanan Kemajuan Pertanian Selangor.

Despite this the CEOs have been allowed to keep their jobs for several reasons.

“We want them to redeem their mistakes and recover the money they lost due to corruption. We will sack them if they cannot do so and we’ll take further action (as well),” he said.

Efforts to clean up the administration are underway, but there are some aspects that require more attention.

“For example I have received complaints that people in the previous government are still seated in tender panels and continue to abuse their position,” he added.

“We will deal with this by directing tender panels in local councils to practise an open tender system that is open to all members of the public.”

"Max Payne" shoots to top of box office roster

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Action-packed "Max Payne" shot its way to the top of the North American box office, grossing $18 million during the video game adaptation's first weekend in theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

The dark, atmospheric film, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a cop in search of the men who killed his wife and child, outshone Oliver Stone's much-talked-about "W.," which debuted at No. 4 with a take of $10.6 million.

"The estimates for 'W.' were all over the place," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "You can't really expect that a politically charged movie like that would take the weekend over a big video game adaptation with a movie star in the lead role."

"Max Payne" follows in the footsteps of games turned into films including the "Tomb Raider" movies starring Angelina Jolie, which were commercial hits but critically clobbered by gamers.

Stone's portrait of U.S. President George W. Bush was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.

Walt Disney Co's family comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" was kicked to the No. 2 spot with a take of $11.2 million, bringing its total receipts to $69.1 million.

The civil rights era movie "The Secret Life of Bees," which is based on a best-selling novel, was a close No. 3, debuting with take of $11.1 million for the weekend.

"Max Payne" was released by 20th Century Fox and "The Secret Life of Bees" by Fox Searchlight, both units of News Corp.

The action thriller "Eagle Eye" slipped to the No. 5 spot on the list with a take of $7.3 million, bringing its total so far to $81.3 million.

"Eagle Eye" was released by DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

Summit Entertainment's teen comedy "Sex Drive," debuted at No. 9 on the weekend roster with a total of $3.6 million.

Wall Street eyes earnings, looking for

NEW YORK (AP) -- With little question the U.S. is in the grips of a recession, investors this week will lean on a stream of earnings and economic reports to help determine exactly how prolonged and painful the downturn might be.

There's certainly been fresh evidence the credit market has begun to thaw. But, that alone might not be enough to restore confidence in the stock market at a time when investors are clamoring for stronger signs of a bottom.

Trying to predict a floor for major U.S. stock market indexes has proven to be a difficult task. Wall Street ended a volatile two-week run fairly stable on Friday, and there were indications that bank-to-bank lending rates eased and that some companies returned to the bond market to raise cash.

Those indicators might have previously been enough to reassure anxious investors that the worst is over for the stock market. However, amid a financial crisis not seen for decades, analysts still remain cautious.

"If you can survive the whiplash of this bottom formation, then stocks look ridiculously cheap," said Edward Yardeni, president and market analyst at Yardeni Research. "But, there are bigger questions. Investors still want to see the light of day in this credit crisis, and they want to know if the current recession will be relatively short and shallow."

He said the biggest question facing Wall Street is whether the stock market's current levels have priced in all the pain that goes along with a recession. Indexes could slip even further if the market is sideswiped by a disappointing batch of economic news or dour corporate reports.

Sunday evening, stock index futures signaled a slightly higher open. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 54, or 0.61 percent, to 8,825. Standard & Poor's 500 futures rose 7.30, or 0.78 percent, to 940.50; while Nasdaq-100 futures rose 7.00, or 0.53 percent, to 1,318.

It was impossible to tell whether the market would hold at those levels by the time trading resumes Monday. Markets in Asia and Europe could set the tone for the start of the week in the U.S., and any news developments before the opening bell on Wall Street will ultimately determine how U.S. stocks fare.

Traders return to work Monday with a bit of history lingering over the session. Sunday marked the anniversary of the 1987 stock market crash known as "Black Monday." The Dow plunged 22.6 percent that day to mark the largest one-session percentage decline ever.

The blue chip index that tracks 30 of America's biggest companies will begin trading Monday at the 8,852.22 level, down a stunning 37.5 percent from its record closing high of 14,164.53 set Oct. 9, 2007. Analysts remain mixed over whether the roller-coaster trading of recent weeks is a sign of capitulation, a Wall Street term that indicates a sense of despair among investors that's a perquisite to a rebound.

The last time Wall Street reached such a cathartic level was during the last bear market, when the Dow fell 37.8 percent from a close of 11,722.98 on Jan. 14, 2000, to 7,286.27 on Oct. 9, 2002. However, then investors didn't have to worry about a recession blocking a rebound.

Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank, said the biggest signs that a bottom has formed will be how investors react to bad news this coming week. He believes investors have engaged in "slash and burn selling" with all the news converging at once, and a change in that pattern will be telling.

"I think the bad economic data and earnings are already priced in to an extent," he said. "What I'm looking for is a disconnect with investors where bad economic news or a bad earnings report is greeted by a rally, that will be telling about which direction we're heading."

Ablin points out that earnings reports and economic data are mostly backward looking, and in most cases reflect conditions before the meltdown hit its peak in the past few months. He's interested in what chief executives have to say about their companies going forward.

The consensus among many analysts is that companies will begin to curtail their projections for the fourth quarter because of deteriorating growth. There have been a number of reports already out from companies like Google Inc. and Honeywell International Inc. that overall have not been as bad as feared.

This week, a larger breadth of America's business community are set to release results. Among them are Dow components' AT&T Inc., Caterpillar Inc., 3M Co., Boeing Co., Microsoft Corp., and McDonald's Corp. Others include Amazon.com Inc., UPS Inc., and Altria Group Inc.

Economic reports this week include September's index of leading U.S. economic indicators on Monday. Other big reports include Thursday's weekly U.S. jobless claims and Friday's report on existing home sales.

Investors might also get a better idea about what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke thinks about the credit and stock markets. He is scheduled to testify at a house Budget Committee hearing about the economy and financial markets.

"All of this could extend the extraordinary volatility we've been seeing," Yardeni said. "But, some would say that's actually a sign we're making a bottom, as painful as it is."

Islamic banking escapes fallout of global financial crunch

Islamic banking has largely escaped the fallout from the global financial crisis, thanks to rules that forbid the sort of risky business that is felling mainstream institutions.

MCPXBut experts say that because of its heavy reliance on property investments and private equity, the booming 1.0 trillion dollar global industry could be hit if the turmoil worsens and real assets start to crumble.

"In the current financial turmoil, it is interesting to note that Islamic financing may have prevented a majority of the mess created by the conventional banking and financial institutions," Kuwait Finance House said in a report.

"The outlook for Islamic financing is bright and will likely take the lead in terms of providing funding for major projects as the conventional banking system reevaluates its business model."

The rules of Islamic banking and finance - which incorporate principles of syariah or Islamic law - read like a how-to guide on avoiding the kind of disaster that is currently gripping world markets.

Islamic law prohibits the payment and collection of interest, which is seen as a form of gambling, so highly complex instruments such as derivatives and other creative accounting practices are banned.

Transactions must be backed by real assets - not shady repackaged subprime mortgages - and because risk is shared between the bank and the depositor there is an incentive for the institutions to ensure the deal is sound.

Investors have a right to know how their funds are being used, and the sector is overseen by dedicated supervisory boards as well as the usual national regulatory authorities.

There will be an impact

"Islamic banking has, thus far, remained positive, despite the current challenging global financial environment," said Zeti Akhtar Aziz, the central bank governor of Malaysia, which is Southeast Asia's leader in Islamic banking.

Zeti said this month that because of the slowing global economy, plans for Islamic "sukuk" bonds had been postponed or scrapped by companies including Kuwait's Abyaar Real Estate Development Co and Malaysia's Perisai Petroleum.

And Jennifer Chang, a partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Kuala Lumpur, said that given the extent of the global crisis, Islamic banks may suffer damage despite their strong position.

"Islamic banks, especially in the Middle East, got heavily into private equity and real estate investments, and a lot of loans may be backed by properties. So if the property market goes down, there will be an impact," she said.

"If a borrower is not able to pay then the bank will foreclose and the question is - can you sell the property in the market and at what value? These are issues which all banks can face."

There have been calls for the conventional banking industry to take a leaf out of the book of Islamic finance, which also shuns investments in gaming, alcohol and pornography in favour of ethical investments.

Influential Sunni cleric Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi earlier this month called on Muslims to take advantage of the turmoil to build an economic system compatible with Islamic principles.

"The collapse of the capitalist system based on usury and paper and not on goods traded on the market is proof that it is in crisis and shows that Islamic economic philosophy is holding up," said the Egyptian-born, Qatar-based cleric.

No safe harbours

In recent years the sector has broken out of its niche and been embraced by mainstream banks. As well as basic bank deposits and investment accounts, it has expanded into areas including equity funds, bonds and Islamic hedge funds.

Abhishek Kumar, a senior research analyst at Financial Insights, a company under market research and analysis firm International Data Corp (IDC), said recent events may further boost the sector.

"More and more institutions will be interested in providing Islamic services to diversify their risk portfolio," he said, while warning that in the current financial storm there were no absolutely safe harbours.

"We're not really sure what the real extent of the impact is, and whether we've passed the worst of it or not, But the extent is not going to be as bad as in the mainstream sector," he said.

Hamilton wins in China, Massa keeps title hopes alive

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton did everything but win the title in Shanghai on Sunday, as he scored his fifth victory of the season in a pluperfect style that left championship rival Felipe Massa floundering in his wake.

The Brazilian ran third for much of the race, astern of Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen as they struggled vainly to keep the McLaren in sight. Then on lap 49 the Finn conceded second place, so that Massa left China with 87 points to Hamilton’s 94 - and with his admittedly fading championship aspirations still alive.

Raikkonen stayed clear of a closing Fernando Alonso, who pushed hard all the way through for Renault, and Nick Heidfeld led BMW Sauber team mate Robert Kubica home as the Pole saw his own title hopes die. His three points leave him on 75, too far behind Hamilton.

The race started with a bang. Hamilton easily beat the Ferraris into the first corner and Alonso finally got the better of McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen as they duelled over fourth. Further back, however, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais tipped Jarno Trulli’s Toyota into a spin. The Frenchman was badly delayed; the Italian made one pit stop at the end of the lap and another a lap later, to retire.

Adrian Sutil and Kovalainen were the only other non-finishers. The Force India stopped on the entry to the pits on lap 13, and Kovalainen, whose McLaren had been smoking on the grid, fell from fifth place to the tail of the field on lap 35 when its right front Bridgestone tyre failed. Later he parked the car in the garage with a mechanical problem.

A one-stop strategy worked well for Timo Glock as he brought the second Toyota home seventh ahead of Nelson Piquet, who had a strong run in the other Renault. There were no points for Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso as they finished ninth, ahead of Red Bull’s David Coulthard and an aggressive Rubens Barrichello who was on good form for Honda. Kazuki Nakajima was another one-stopper, finishing 12th ahead of Bourdais, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Williams team mate Nico Rosberg, Honda’s Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Force India.

The race did not, in the end, clinch the title for Hamilton, but it did exorcise the ghost of Fuji and it leaves him needing only four points in Brazil. That means he can let the Ferraris and Alonso do what they like, as fifth place will do the job whatever Massa achieves.

Rossi romps to victory in Malaysia

Sunday, 19 October 2008

Valentino Rossi took his 2008 win tally up to nine with a triumph in Sepang.

Valentino Rossi took victory number nine of his 2008 season in the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, escaping from the clutches of Dani Pedrosa in the final third of an exciting race at the Sepang circuit.

The 2008 MotoGP World Champion had started from second on the grid, but held onto the tail of Pedrosa´s Repsol Honda RC212V as his rival attempted to make an early breakaway. After taking the lead from the Spaniard on lap ten Rossi set about creating an advantage of his own, and as the race entered the final third the biggest problem for the Italian was the threat of rain.

With the option open to come in and change bikes, the Fiat Yamaha man -and indeed all the other riders so used to the changeable nature of conditions in Sepang- elected to stick out the light rainfall, a decision vindicated when the rain passed and the high temperatures quickly dried up any residual wetness.

With his latest podium finish Rossi extends his run of rostrum placings to eight consecutive Grands Prix, with a chance of win number ten in Valencia at next weekend´s season finale.

Pedrosa placed inside the top three in Sepang for the third time in as many premier class visits to the Malaysian track, although it was not enough to keep the battle for the runner-up spot in the 2008 World Championship standings alive. Nonetheless, the Spaniard recorded his best race result on Bridgestone tyres, after taking his first pole for the Japanese manufacturer on Saturday afternoon.

With just one race left in his maiden MotoGP season, Andrea Dovizioso finally achieved a first premier class podium after a tooth-and-nail battle with Nicky Hayden. The JiR Team Scot rider also moved further into contention for the Rookie of the Year honour as his result combined with a crash from rival Jorge Lorenzo.

San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Shinya Nakano showed that he was also up for a battle, eventually keeping the fifth spot despite the best attempts of 2007 Sepang racewinner Casey Stoner. Sixth place was enough for Stoner to confirm second in the season´s overall classification.

Loris Capirossi, Colin Edwards, Chris Vermeulen and Randy de Puniet rounded off the first ten past the chequered flag in the 21-lap race.

MCA poll: Polling ends, counting underway

The counting of ballots for the hotly-contested MCA triennial party election is currently underway after a two-hour polling closed at about 3pm today.

At press time, the counting is going on in the San Choon Hall at the MCA headquarters in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. The polling and counting went on smoothly with no untoward incident reported.

A high attendance of 99.04 percent, or 2,378 delegates, turned up to cast their votes today. The election results are expected to be known after 7pm.

According to seasoned party observers, there appeared to be mixed signals from the delegates so far but the question on everyone’s lips now is whether there will be any major upset in the contest for top posts.

All eyes are focus on the tussle for the presidency which is a straight fight between former vice-president Chua Jui Meng and incumbent vice-president Ong Tee Keat.

Favourite Tee Keat is said to be still having an edge over his rival although Jui Meng’s camp said they are confident to garner more than 40 percent votes based on the exit polls.

In his previous bid for the presidency in 2005, Jui Meng was defeated by the current president Ong Ka Ting. He garnered 37 percent of votes then.

Tough task for new leadership

As for the four-cornered fight for the deputy presidency, the race is said to be between another former vice-president Dr Chua Soi Lek and secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan.

The two other candidates are incumbent vice-president Donald Lim and former Penang state assemblyperson Lee Hack Teik.

Ka Chuan, aligned to the mainstream faction of the party leadership, was initially seen to be leading the race but Soi Lek was said to have picked up steam in the final push for votes.

During the introduction of the candidates at noon just now, Soi Lek was given a louder applause as compared to the scattered response received by Ka Chuan, also the elder brother of Ka Ting.

For the vice-president's posts, eight candidates are vying for the four slots - incumbent vice-president Dr Fong Chan Onn, ex-vice-president Yap Pian Hon, outgoing MCA Youth chief Liow Tiong Lai, outgoing MCA Wanita chief Dr Ng Yen Yen, Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung, Kuala Langat MCA division vice-chairperson Lim Teck Chong, Johor deputy chief Tan Kok Hong and Deputy Finance Minister Kong Cho Ha.

It is believed that Liow and Kong are the front runners and the remaining two positions are narrowed down to Ng, Tan and Chor.

A total of 63 candidates, the biggest field in MCA's electoral histroy, are vying for the 25 slots in the powerful central committee, the party’s highest decision-making body.

Ka Ting and his deputy Chan Kong Choy are not defending their posts.

MCA is trying to regain the hearts and minds of the Chinese community following its humiliating defeat in the March general election.

At the national polls, the party only managed to win 46 state and parliamentary seats compared to the 106 it had secured at the 2004 polls.

The new batch of leaders will have a tough task in regaining the support of the community.

Rossi and Lorenzo waiting on the weather

Saturday, 18 October 2008
Fiat Yamaha will have both Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo taking off from the front row on Sunday afternoon in Sepang.
Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo both shone in difficult conditions on Saturday in Sepang, with the Fiat Yamaha duo placing on the front row together for the fourth time this season. The 2008 MotoGP World Champion and this year´s Rookie of the Year in-waiting are expecting a tough fight on Sunday, and are hoping that it happens in the dry.
Valentino Rossi - Second

`The conditions were incredible today and this practice was as much about strategy as it was about qualifying tyres and set-up, because you had to judge the right moment to go out with the right tyre. We worked very well in our garage and managed to make the right decisions every time, so I was at the top or near to it for most of the session and able to constantly make big improvements. When I saw that I´d done a 2´01.9 I thought that I might have the pole, but Dani was even faster so congratulations to him today. Anyway it´s good to be back on the front row because we have been off it for two races, and now we´re in a good place to start our challenge tomorrow. I am really looking forward to the race because I love this track and my M1 is really flying here. However I hope the weather is ok because for sure it will be more fun in the dry!´

Jorge Lorenzo - Third

`It was a strange session today but as the track began to get more and more dry I thought that it would be possible to try for the pole position. I made some good laps but I think in the end, and after so many laps in the wet, I wasn´t quite at the maximum in the dry and I didn´t do the fastest possible lap I could have. Anyway this front row is very important because I am determined to be back on the podium tomorrow and now we are in good shape to fight for that. I hope that the weather is better tomorrow and that we can have a dry race, our bike is working so well here and I am looking forward to the battle.´

STONER OUT OF TIME IN SEPANG

Saturday, 18 October 2008
Casey Stoner was unable to undertake a final flying lap as he chased pole position in Malaysia.
Last year´s racewinner in Sepang, Casey Stoner will start the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix from seventh on the grid after running out of time in qualifying. The Australian rider was just unable to put down his time before the session was declared closed, without the opportunity to fully use a third qualifying tyre.

Ducati teammate Marco Melandri placed fourteenth in the session.
Casey Stoner - Seventh

`The guys did a great job with the bike overnight and in the dry this morning it felt much better than it had done yesterday. My pace was good and I felt much more comfortable. We struggled a little bit in the afternoon because there wasn't enough weight on the rear but we didn´t really get much time to work on that because it dried out so quickly. In any case, the wet pace was pretty good so if it rains tomorrow, which looks likely, then I´m confident we'll have a good set-up. Unfortunately qualifying was a bit of a lottery with the way the track dried out and we missed the chequered flag with my final qualifying tyre by just twenty seconds, so that was frustrating. Anyway, the most important thing is that we´re in good shape for wet or dry conditions so I'm looking forward to going out and having some fun in the race.´

Marco Melandri - Fourteenth

`The conditions today were a little strange but in the end the track was dry so I can´t blame that for my fourteenth place. I know I´m repeating myself but I don´t have any feeling with the bike in these conditions and that´s despite doing a good job with my team on the set-up here. It is going to make it difficult tomorrow, especially with such tough conditions that we always have to deal with here in Malaysia.

Historic first Bridgestone pole creates confidence in Pedrosa

Saturday, 18 October 2008
A 2´01.548 lap of the Sepang circuit put Dani Pedrosa into the history books as the first rider to take pole with two different tyre manufacturers in a single season.
Dani Pedrosa took his first pole position with Bridgestone tyres in the thrilling Sepang qualifying shootout, a spectacular return to form for the Spaniard after six races away from the front row. The Repsol Honda rider snatched the top spot from Valentino Rossi at the end of the hour-long session, becoming the first rider in history to take pole with two different tyre manufacturers in a single season. His previous pole of the year came on Michelin rubber at Le Mans.

`It is fantastic to be on pole here, especially since this is my first pole with Bridgestone tyres, so a big thank you to them and also to my team who have worked so hard for this,´ said an elated Pedrosa after putting down his storming 2´01.548 lap.

`Track conditions were changing all the time this afternoon, so it was quite tricky. At the beginning it was wet, then little by little the track dried, so you had to be on the ball to understand when it was best to change tyres. I was able to get in a good lap time in my final run, and I´m very happy to get this pole position.´

`Victory´ in qualifying holds a special significance at a circuit like Sepang, where the front row has traditionally provided the race winner in the premier class. Pedrosa has upped his race pace from his initial Friday morning struggles during the previous practice sessions, and now feels confident ahead of the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix –whatever the weather.

`Pole is particularly important here because the lap times are all very close, so a good start will be crucial. We already know what race tyres we are going to use and I feel that we are ready to race. Of course, everything depends on the weather, it usually rains here most days, so we will have to wait and see when tomorrow´s rain storm arrives. It could be wet, dry or mixed.´
